iTeach Session 4: The iPad in Education

20 Mar

Our final session wraps up this professional development series by looking critically at the apps available for iPad use. Participants will review a variety of evaluation rubrics and checklists created by educators to rate, rank, and recommend iPad resources. We will also use Apps Gone Free (free) and visit iGameMom.com as a sources for notification of resources and reviews of potential apps for our classrooms.

Our final activity gives participants practice using video conferencing in the classroom and explores ways the built-in iPad camera utilizes apps like Skype (free) or Face Time (built-in) to enhance classroom projects and motivate students.

iTeach Session 3: Feedback

11 Mar

I post feedback for our workshops for three reasons.

First, to document the session for our benefactors, the Augustine Educational Foundation and Hawaii Schools of the Future. We want to let them know that it was worth their support!

Second, the comments are posted so that there is accountability that comments and feedback be used to improve the next session and meet the needs of the participants, while at the same time, meeting the goals and objectives of the training.

Finally, if you take the time to read through the comments as a participant, it often is a revelation to see similar thoughts. It may validate your comfort level and even substantiate your confusion! The varying reactions to the session material becomes a collaboration platform, creating a community of learners.

This week the iTeach participants completed an “3-2-1 Exit Survey” at the end of the training. Here are the results.

Share 3 things you learned today.

  • How to create a file that let’s my students share their work on their iPad. How to use Pinterest. How to use iAnnotate to write lessons.
  • I learned how to use the QR reader, to become a little more familiar with the iPad, and to explore Pinterest.
  • 1)I like Educreations and am eager for my students to try it. 2)I plan to use iAnnotate for next year to edit work and assign PDFs for students to edit. 3) I like the PDF maker on iAnnotate which we can use and edit from.
  • How to use Survey Monkye (I wasn’t here last week). How I can use Educreations to diagram sentences. That I’m going to love Pinterest.
  • 1. Educreations with my students. 2. Possible ways to use iAnnotate as a way to reduce paper use. 3. Short cuts for both apps.
  • I learned Educreations is very similar to Show Me, but may be easier to integrate with Edmodo. I learned why my step-daughter loves Pinterest. I learned that I should reconsider iAnnotate.
  • iAnnotate-how to change tools on bar, create PDFs. Educreations-what it can be used for, another resource to use to show kids videos.
  • How to create a QR code. We can collaborate with teachers any place using Web 2.0. An introduction to using iAnnotate.
  • Educreations is an easy tool to use…like it better that Explain Everything. iAnnotate… like how it can be used but know that time will be needed to learn well. QR reader.
  • iAnnotate. QR reader. Educreations.
  • iAnnotate is amazing! I can use Educreations to have students diagram sentences and record their explanations. I can find interesting articles on iTunes U.
  • That I am really slow on the uptake when it comes to understanding what Christina is teacher. That I can learn this stuff if I practice. That I can use these apps in my news writing class.
  • Educreations will help the class to create their own problem solving questions and peers can solve them. iAnnotate and Pinterest.
  • Educreations – use the graph paper background for math!
  • That I would never use iAnnotate for what I teach. I really liked Educreations but I’m not sure how I would use it. That so far QR read has been the most interesting app.
  • How to use Pinterest. What Web 2.0 is and how to use iAnnotate.
  • Educreations was fun! iAnnotate was great. Loved Pinterest.
  • I enjoyed Educreations best 🙂 iAnnotate is something new to explore. I’m a Pinterest fan so i’m glad you shared it with the group.
  • QR reader. What Web 2.0 is. How to use Educreations.
  • iAnnotate has many tolls that will enable me to go paperless.
  • 1. How to create a QR code for the classroom. 2. How to utilize Educreations with students. Students create lessons. 3. How to use iAnnotate: create PDF from website, highlight, and make notes.

What are 2 questions you have?

  • How to import files into the iAnnotate app.
  • What is Educreations? What is iAnnotate?
  • At this moment, I need to try out what we learned first.
  • I don’t know enough to aks questions yet.
  • How does iAnnotate compare to Notability? I want to know how paperless work flow works with iAnnotate.
  • I want a “science folder” on the iPad next year instead of having hard copies. Can I put PDFs, pages documents, videos, pictures, etc. in Evernote? I still want to use many of my worksheets but want the students to write on an electronic copy of it. Is there another way to do this that costs less than iAnnotate? Can this also be put in the “science folder?”
  • Can you put some of this info you have taught on your website? Are you available for questions?
  • How do you use Dropbox to find students’ papers for iAnnotate? Can we go over Socrative next time?
  • How did you get to the pin part of Pinterest? Can I use Educreations to create illustrations for our newspaper?
  • Will there be another time we can go over these apps?
  • Will we have lessons on learning wikis and Edmodo? Can we make up a missed workshop?
  • If I create a Pinterest account for work (separate from my personal acct) using my work email and I leave this job at some point, will I lose that account?
  • How do I create/use Survey Monkey and can you let me know if you have any more classes?
  • How can I use iAnnotate in 1st grade? Where do I get ideas for this online?
  • How would you teach digital citizenship? How would you create a Web 2.0 web page or easy coding?
  • How can we download a PDF file to iPad? Are there any other “Pinterest” type websites?
  • How do I unpin something in Pinterest?
  • How do you save student responses after they answer questions posted on QR reader?
  • Would you happen to have any handouts for these apps? More importantly, will I remember how to use them?

Name 1 thing you will try out in the next week from this iTeach session.

  • See the other Educreation recording available on the website.
  • Explore Evernote — so far I like that package the best.
  • I will try out the QR coding.
  • I want to use Educreations right away.
  • Try to have my students use Educreations to Read it, Draw it, Solve it math problems.
  • I think I’ll add Pinterest to my “insomnia” browsing.
  • I have already used QR reader and Socrative and am planning on continuing to use it. I’ve been on Pinterest for a while and I love it. I will try iAnnotate.
  • I need time to explore the apps we used today.
  • Educreations
  • Creating a QR code and I will try to figure out if I already signed up for Pinterest and simply can’t remember my password.
  • Pinterest!
  • I will create a QR code to put in our next newspaper issue.
  • Educreation.
  • I hope to use Educreations for math integers.
  • Educreations to do a treasure map activity for St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Educreations to make simple addition and subtraction questions for Kindergarten.
  • I am going to have students upload an assignment next week and make comments to the student with iAnnotate.

Any additional comments or suggestions?

  • I am sorry I am not able to come to class on time.
  • thank you for an action/idea packed workshop!
  • I’m looking to go paperless as much as possible next year. I’d like to see how I would use Dropbox with students for turning in work. Is it more organized than getting 50 emails?
  • Mahalo for today’s class, so much to learn.
  • Enjoying this series of classes!
  • Great job!
  • Thank you!
  • Wow… I want more… I wish I could go to the next class. Mahalo.
  • Great job! Very usable activities today. Good pace not too fast. Not overwhelming.
  • Great information.
  • Can we learn more about ePortfolios?
  • This was very helpful.
  • Wonderful workshop.
  • Thoroughly enjoying this workshop! Thank you for teaching us.

iTeach Session 2: Feedback

21 Feb

You plan for delays when using technology… equipment problems, power surges, various levels of experience. For Session 2, we were NOT prepared to have so many of our colleagues unable to attend because of an area man-hunt and school lock-down!

Nevertheless, the participants were engaged and energetic as we explored using the iPad as an Organizer learning about QR Codes and creating them, then exploring the features of Evernote.

At the end of the session, 28 participants provided feedback, scanning a provided QR Code, linking the participant to a form through Survey Monkey (a free service up to 10 questions per survey). Here are the results.
